History of Al-Kharj Governorate and Its Most Prominent Aspects of Human Heritage

Abstract

This study aims to present a brief overview of the history of Al-Kharj Governorate and to highlight the most prominent aspects of its human heritage, represented in the customs and traditions of its inhabitants, as well as the crafts and traditional industries they practiced prior to the modern era in which the governorate witnessed notable contemporary development. The study also seeks to explore the extent to which the human heritage of Al-Kharj is connected to the broader heritage of the Najd region.

The significance of this study lies in the fact that Al-Kharj is an important and vital part of the fabric of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It has played a long historical role filled with events, and its role has been influential and effective in various political, economic, social, and cultural aspects of life in the Arabian Peninsula and its surroundings. This is due to its strategic location at the heart of the peninsula, linking its northern and southern regions, as well as its eastern and western parts.

The study reached several important conclusions, including that the history of Al-Kharj Governorate is closely connected to the history of the Riyadh region and city in particular, and to the history of the Najd region in general. Another key finding is that the geographical location of Al-Kharj, situated in the center of the Arabian Peninsula, made it a link between the north and south, and between the east and west. For many centuries, Al-Kharj served as a resting station for trade caravans traveling across the Arabian Peninsula.
