Abstract

Shun Pao, a prominent newspaper in contemporary Shanghai, records the social culture in Shanghai in detail, encompassing a wealth of content pertaining to stage art and cultural consumption. Through the transition from a traditional society to the modern era, this newspaper documented the transformations within stage venues, artistic genres, and the cultural consumption associated with performances, thereby capturing its profound significance for Shanghai and the nation as a whole. Amidst the vibrant flourishing of stage art and its consumption, the acceptance of diverse foreign cultures facilitated the preservation and enhancement of traditional performing arts while also expediting the dissemination of novel ideas.
