Abstract

The Tang Dynasty witnessed the first studies of the relationship between Buddhism and Bai Juyi. With the advent of modern scholarship, however, interest in the subject became more intense. For the most renowned academic commentators, there are four principal aspects to the relationship between the two traditions. These are: Bai Juyi Buddhist karma, the unity of Buddhist characteristics, Bai Juyi and the sects of Buddhism, and finally, Buddhism and the creation of Bai Juyi literature.
